In this sketch entitled 'The serious side of nature' and 'The Cold Weather: a contrast between London and Vienna', the artist shows the poor of London huddled against the rain in the doorway of a pawnbroker's shop and the poor of Vienna indoors around a fire. In the first sketch is written the words 'as they are' and the second 'as they might be'.
