Eire becomes a republic on the anniversary of the Easter Rising of 1916: the General Post Office in O'Connell Street, focal point of the rebellion, here the saluting-base for the military parade in Dublin on Easter Monday. The president Mr. T. O'Kelly and the Premier, Mr. Costello attended the ceremonies. Under the Republic of Ireland Act, Eire became a Republic at midnight on Easter Sunday, April 17th 1949. A 21-gun salute from O'Connell Bridge and the singing of the Irish National Anthem heralded the birth of the new State.
