Home Again. The scene on the deck of HMS 'Discovery' at the end of her Arctic expedition, Portsmouth, 1876. In 1875 the British Admiralty sent Captain George Nares with two ships, HMS 'Alert' and HMS 'Discovery', to make an attempt to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound. The attempt was unsuccessful, but a new 'furthest North' record was set, the coasts of Greenland and Ellesmere Island were charted and much scientific data gathered. The image shows the scene, in the autumn of 1876, as the sailors are re-united with their loved ones after a year away and the excited public is welcomed aboard the ship.
