Description The ship, Cospatrick in flames
Details

Emigrant ship, the 'Cospatrick' on fire at sea. On discovery of the fire, the crew tried to extingush the flames, but the wind spread them around the ship. Once the passengers were aware of the fire, panic set in and people tried to save themselves by jumping overboard, many drowning as a result. Some managed to get into the lifeboats, however, only two remained afloat and all the passengers perished. Out of 429 Emigrant passengers and crew of 45, only three people survived.
