Description The Union Flag and Polish Flag flying over Monte Cassino
Details

The flags of Poland and Great Britain flying over the ruins of the monastery at Monte Cassino, May 1944. Between January and May 1944 the town of Cassino and Benedictine monastery of Monte Cassino were completely destroyed as the Allied Fifth Army attempted to push the occupying Nazi troops out of their strong defensive position in the area. This photograph marks the point when the Allied troops finally won control of the monastery and the Germans retreated.
