Mr Justice Avory sentencing Thomas Allaway to death. This photograph is unique as it is the only one ever taken in a British Court of Justice showing a judge wearing the dreaded black cap. Thomas Henry Allaway was convicted of the murder of Irene May Wilkins and was hung.
