Thomas Carlyle (1795 - 1881), Scottish historian and essayist, delivering the address during his installation as Lord Rector of Edinburgh University, April 1866. The gentlemen in the front row of the gathering are as follows (left to right): Dr. Guthrie, Sir George Harvey, Thomas Carlyle, Rev. Dr. Lee, Professor Tyndall, Sir David Brewster, Professor Huxley and Lord Neaves.
