Details |
Photograph of Tippoo Tib, then Chief of the Manyema, c.1887. His real name was Hamid ibn Mohammed and he was an African-Arab adventurer and warrior, who controlled a large section of Central Africa. 'Tippoo Tib', which means 'whistling bullets', was by turns, a cultured and kind man and a merciless slaver. His aid to H.M. Stanley and other European explorers was invaluable in their exploration and exploitation of the Central African region.
