Photograph of Tippoo Tib's Ivory Store at Stanley Falls on the Lualaba River, c.1887. Stanley Falls are now known as the Boyoma Falls and are in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Tippoo Tib (1837-1905), whose real name was Hamid ibn Mohammed, was an African-Arab adventurer and warrior, who controlled a large section of Central Africa. His aid to H.M. Stanley and other European explorers was invaluable in their exploration and exploitation of the region.
