Details

A railway shelter for the night with men, women and children huddled together in a carriage on a siding at Numadzu Station after the catastrophic earthquake that hit Tokyo and neighbouring town Yokohama in 1923. The earthquake occurred at midday on the 1st of September, at time when many people were preparing their meals. Fires spread destroying everything that the earthquake had left behind. The death toll rose to over 70000, with many more people left homeless.
