Description | Transatlantic telephone system by G. H. Davis |
Details |
A step-by-step diagram demonstrating the new transatlantic telephone system between Britain and the United States in 1927. ~~The process involved the British caller asking for 'American Service, please' after which the call would be put through the English transmitting station at Rugby. Here it is transferred by wireless and flung out to space. Crossing the Atlantic it reaches the receiving station at Houlton, Maine, USA and then by cable to New York. An operator would observe the needle of the voice-recording galvanometer and regulate it so that the sound was uniform and distinct. The minimum three-minute call to New York at the time cost ú15.
