A group of VAD nurses, attached to the St John's Ambulance Assocation, pictured at a hospital in France where they had been since the outbreak of war. The nurses wear arm brassards with the St. John's badge. The matron (centre) is reading a magazine or newspaper while a nurse to the right is darning a sock.
