Description | Verderer at the gate of Royal Enclosure, Ascot |
Details |
One of the Royal Foresters, or Verderers, of Windsor Park, performing his annual duty of keeping guard at the gate of the Royal Enclosure during Ascot Week, access to which was one of the most exclusive invitations during the Season. Formerly, the duties of a Verderer of the King's forest were, in the formidable words of Blackstone, 'to preserve the vert and venison, keep the assizes, view, receive, and enroll attachments and presentments of all manner of trespasses,' a task from which keeping the gate at Ascot would be a pleasant change indeed.
