Special colour supplement from the ILN, June 1857 to commemorate the introduction of the Victoria Cross, a new order of valour first bestowed by Queen Victoria upon Crimean War veterans. The page shows a variety of acts of heroism. Clockwise from top left: John Berryman (Troop Serg. Major)refusing to leave Captain Webb at Balaklava. W. Norman, (Private) bringing in single-handed two Russian soldiers. Thomas Beach (Private) at Inkerman, rescuing Colonel Carpenter. F. C. Elton (Major) working in the trenches under heavy fire. C. H.
