Special colour supplement from the ILN, June 1857 to commemorate the introduction of the Victoria Cross, a new order of valour first bestowed by Queen Victoria upon Crimean War veterans. The page shows a variety of acts of heroism. Clockwise from top left: John Berryman (Troop Serg. Major)refusing to leave Captain Webb at Balaklava. W. Norman, (Private) bringing in single-handed two Russian soldiers. Thomas Beach (Private) at Inkerman, rescuing Colonel Carpenter. F. C. Elton (Major) working in the trenches under heavy fire. C. H. Lumley (Brevet Major) in the Redan, engaged with three Russian gunners. John Grieve (Serg. Major) saving the life of an officer at Balaklava.
