Description | View of South London |
Details |
The Colosseum Print, a view of south London, based on a photograph by Antoine Claudet taken from the top of the Duke of York's Column, 124 feet high. An artist, C.F.Sargent, then drew the photographic detail onto a wood block which was then sent to the engraving firm of Ebenezer Landell. Two months of continuous work followed and the work was then printed by Palmer and Clayton. The picture was given away with the 7th January 1843 issue of the Illustrated London News. Notable landmarks shown include St Paul's Cathedral on the left, Westminster Abbey at the centre, and Buckingham Palace to the right.
