Details

William ('Bill') Tatem Tilden (1893 - 1953), American tennis player, known as 'Big Bill'. Dominated international tennis in the first half of the 1920s; won Wimbledon three times and the US Open seven times. Pictured here with his latest protege, Jack Behr, who the editorial describes, was 'adopted by the Master'. Tilden was a homosexual and served two prison sentences in the 1940s for so-called 'misdemeanours'.
