Mrs Ernest Simpson (Bessie Wallis Warfield Simpson), pictured in 1927 when wife of Commander Earl Wingfield Spencer of the US Navy, shortly before her divorce. During her second marriage to Ernest Simpson, she met and began an affair with Edward, Prince of Wales. In December 1936, after reigning for less than a year, Edward abdicated the throne in order to marry Wallis following her divorce from her second husband. The couple became the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and lived the rest of their lives abroad.
