Along many sectors of the Front, on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, British and German soldiers warily began to emerge from their opposing trenches and met in No Man's Land to exchange photographs, cigarettes and mementoes. Bairnsfather described how 'one of the Boches ran back to his trench and presently reappeared with a large camera.
