Date 1860
Description Westminster Bridge lit by lime light 1860
Details

Westminster Bridge shown lit by lime light as crowds of people and horse-drawn carriages cross. Lime light was so intense it could be seen 95 miles away, however it presented practical problems as it was necessary to store vast quantities of oxygen and hydrogen gases in close proximity and was potentially dangerous.
