Women of the River Emergency Services standing in a line in full uniform, complete with helmet and scissors slung on a cord around thier necks. The River Emergency Service was established to ensure the smooth running of the Thames during the war and stationed over a dozen aid and ambulance boats, formerly pleasure cruisers, along the river, each with a doctor, nurses and women with basic first aid training.
