Description | Women's rights: the 'siege' of Newnham College, 1921 |
Details |
Anti-feminism at Cambridge University: the 'siege' of Newnham College and student pranks. At this time, women were not accorded equal academic rights and privileges with men at the university, and disturbances broke out following the vote by the Senate of Cambridge University to grant women titular degrees, but not full membership of the University, which was carried by 1012 votes to 370. Newnham College was 'besieged' by anti-feminist protesters, the Jemima Clough Memorial Bronze gates were vandalised, and boisterous undergraduates dressed in drag in protest.
