Description | Women workers in the war zone by H. L. Oakley |
Details |
Silhouettes of French women workers made by Lieutenant (later Captain) H. L. Oakley in the area behind the firing line on the Western Front, 'where every inch of ground is made use of by the inhabitants. All the scenes depicted were actually witnessed, and the subjects form a contrast to the pictures of girls clad in male attire portrayed by English artists. Women do ALL the work on the farms in the absence of men.'
