Details

Nurses and workers of the London District Ambulance Column pictured at their headquarters telephoning members to meet a hospital train which is due to arrive. During the First World War, ambulance trains arrived daily at the termini of the South Coast railways and the occupants were distributed to the numerous military hospitals around London. As well as meeting trains at Charing Cross, Waterloo, Clapham Junction and elsewhere as required, it undertook removal cases from one hospital to another and to convalescent homes in the country.
