WW1 - German U-Boat U-21 ('Otto Hersing'), sinks the British steamer SS 'Linda Blanche' in the Irish Sea on the 30th January 1915. The steamer was bound from Manchester to Belfast when the U-21 rose and came alongside her. Captain Ellis, her skipper, was required to go on board the submarine with his ship's papers. In the meantime, Germans handed cigars and cigarettes to the British crew. The latter were given 10 minutes to collect their belongings and take to the boats. Four Germans boarded the steamer, and placed two explosive shells which blew up 'Linda Blanche', and sank her. The crew rowed to a trawler, which took them to Fleetwood.
