Young man of the Atayal (Tayal, Tayan) tribe, Formosa (now Taiwan). The tattoos on his forehead and chin show that he has reached maturity and is a marriageable member of society. He is wearing a rattan cap and bamboo earplugs. At this time the island of Formosa was a Japanese province.
