Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

We are deeply saddened at the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and offer our condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the royal family at this time.

Only a small percentage of the British population can remember a time before Queen Elizabeth II, and through her long seventy-year reign, she remained a constant and steady presence during a period of unprecedented and frequently tumultuous change. Looking back over the last century, and within the publications in our archive, it is clear that the Queen, who carried out her role with unwavering commitment, was so often a first-hand participant or observer of many world-changing events. As mother, monarch, diplomat, figurehead, icon, she helped to define an era and with her passing, she will be hugely mourned and missed.

Although the birth of Princess Elizabeth of York on the 21 April 1926, provoked a flurry of press interest, nobody could have predicted that the new baby daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York, would eventually become Britain's longest-reigning monarch.

Through seven decades of her reign, and for much of the time before that, Queen Elizabeth II was the most photographed woman in the world, captured in official portraits, at iconic state occasions, weddings and christenings, on countless visits, overseas tours, with her family, or spending time in the company of horses and dogs.

Our collection offers a classic and contextual view of the late Queen, featuring not only well-known as well as rarer photographs, but also newspapers, magazines and all kinds of ephemera bearing her image. From photographs of her wedding, the Coronation and major events, to more unusual angles - an advertisement for Hamley's 'Princess Elizabeth' doll for instance, or the marvellous dress designs by royal dressmaker Hardy Amies – we hope our library can play a part in helping to commemorate the life and times of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
