Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh 1921 - 2021
To mark the death of this remarkable man who lived through extraordinary times, we have put together a visual biography of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Born with the blue blood of the Greek, Russian, British and German royal families coursing through his veins, Prince Philip of Greece, later Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, served with distinction in the Navy during the Second World and, following his marriage to Princess Elizabeth in 1947, hoped to continue his naval career until the death of King George VI and the accession of his wife to the throne, led him, inevitably, to sacrifice his own personal ambitions.
The Duke was often a controversial character, yet he is also renowned for his indefatigable energy, self-reliance and enquiring mind. One of the hardest-working members of the royal family he remained until very recently, an active patron, president or member of some 780 organisations.
Our archive of Prince Philip images includes some exceptional childhood and family pictures from the collection of royal expert Charlotte Zeepvat. Other highlights include the Duke as a polo player from the Michael Chevis collection, and some terrific illustrations including caricatures and a 1955 picture of him driving his Lagonda away from Windsor from The Tatler.
