The Scout Association

The Scout Association archive traces the development of the movement through its 110-year history, including pictures from that very first Brownsea Island camp. The photographic element of the collection also reflects the international character of scouting, with images of scouts from Sweden to the Seychelles. There are records of the wide-ranging efforts of the scouts during both world wars, as well as their participation in the opening ceremony of the 1948 London Olympic Games and at jamborees around the world.

Colin Sherborne

Colin Sherborne studied at the Guildford School of Photography and by the 1950s had established himself as a professional, commercial photographer carrying out (mainly) studio work for a number of big London advertising agencies. The work we represent covers the period from 1957 to 1962, an era when Britain was told by its Prime Minister it had 'never had it so good' a claim well reflected in this archive of imagery devoted to the consumer.

Dora Sprinzel

The artist Dora Sprinzel created a series of fashion drawings in the 1930s that are a stylish tribute to more acclaimed designers. She arrived in London in the early thirties with her husband Paul, as refugees. Paul had been a film director and so Dora was exposed to the glamorous world of the silver screen. She began to forge a career as a fashion illustrator, translating descriptions sent by her sister from the Paris catwalks into a series of elegant images recording the latest styles from visionaries such as Lanvin, Rochas and Schiaparelli.
