It's that time of year when all we really want to do is hunker down indoors, curled up in a comfy chair, a bit like this sculpture; 'Portrait of Angie' which sculptor James Berry submitted to the Royal Academy Exhibition back in 1975 (he then went on to marry Angie, the model for the piece). Anyway, in between the hunkering and hiding from the autumn gloom, there's work to do and we're here to help.

This month's News of Note highlights a fashionable update to one photographer's collection, celebrates famous octogenarians and nonagenarians, sets sail with the Vikings, and ends with a steamy story.

Latest Lousada

We've a small but mighty new update from photographer Sandra Lousada who is continuing to work through her substantial archive, dating back to the late 1950s. This latest batch includes some terrific fashion shoots from the 1960s, '70s and '80s, done for magazines such as Petticoat, Queen and Vanity Fair and clients including Molton Brown.

Among the models featured are Mikki Gardner, the McLean twins, Marie-Lise Gres and Jean Shrimpton, while other famous faces captured by Sandra are publishing titan, George Wiedenfeld, Alec Guinness, Tony Richardson, A.P. Herbert (Sandra's own grandfather) and Yehudi Menuhin, not forgetting one of the dancers from Hot Gossip! Away from fashion and portraiture, there is also a lovely set of scenes of Japan, taken during a trip back in 1965.

You're So Dane

Adding to his ever-growing collection of images of historical ruins, heritage sites, art and architecture, the latest stop for roving photographer Manuel Cohen has been Scandinavia, and we're pleased to flag up a set of images from the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, featuring various Viking objects as well as views of the UNESCO World Heritage site, Urnes Stave Church in Norway and the country's Museum of Cultural History.

Sweden is well-represented too, with exquisite treasures in the Gothenburg, Gotland and Swedish History museums, the Trelleborgen Ring Fortress and details from Lund and Uppsala cathedrals. With reconstructions of Viking ships and settlements, Viking halls, burial mounds and rune stones, it's an excellent resource for Scandi history, both on the Vikings and beyond. IKEA isn't a patch on all this.

On yer bike

We add hundreds, and sometimes thousands of new images to our website every week, but now and again, something comes along which deserves its own little fanfare, just because it’s so lovely. A case in point is the recent submission of images from a 1930s magazine published by the cycling manufacturer, Hercules.

Packed with gorgeous full page illustrations, it’s the perfect evocation of (an admittedly idyllic) inter-war society with pictures devoted to wholesome outdoor pursuits like hiking, camping and caravanning, or village scenes with the local plod and postman gathered around a postbox.

The 80/90/100 Club

A reminder that our interactive celebrity anniversaries pages are now bulging with scores of well-known figures, many of whom have reached, are on their way to reaching, or have passed some landmark birthdays. Whether you're looking for images of Vanessa Redgrave (aged 84), Clint Eastwood (94), or Eva Marie Saint (now 100), we've got film stills and portraits aplenty. But we've also some unique content you won't find elsewhere.

The Studio Canal archive is rich in unusual and rarely-seen stills and behind-the scenes photographs. Find brilliant shots from Cliff Richard's (84) 1960s movie heyday, or stars such as Joan Collins (91) making some of their earliest screen appearances. Elsewhere, our collections of work by various photographers regularly reveal some fantastic and little-known portraits, such as a young Maggie Smith by Roger Mayne, or Edna O'Brien by Sandra Lousada. Whether you're working on a TV programme, magazine feature or news item, do check our website or drop us a line (and remember you need to be logged in and linked to an account to view all of our film material).

An Evening of Doggy Delights

Our recent evening event at the library when Heidi Hudson from the Royal Kennel Club gave a fascinating talk on the history of dog photography was well-attended, despite the torrential rain! Audience members asked plenty of questions afterwards and Heidi's dog, Bob, ensured that all pat and cuddle opportunities were equally distributed.

If you're interested about being kept informed about future events at the library, drop us a brief email to pictures@maryevans.com and we'll make sure you're among the first to be alerted.

200 years on track

Trainspotters assemble. Next year marks the 200th anniversary of the advent of the Darlington and Stockton Railway, which chugged into action on the 27th September 1825 and was the firs public railway to use steam engines on the 26-mile track in Co. Durham linking the collieries at Shildon with Darlington and Stockton.

The bicentenary is being celebrated in style with the opening of a major new museum, Hopetown, in Darlington. We've pleased to have been able to supply images for this and other projects connected to the anniversary.

You can discover more about Hopetown here while for a selection of images on the early railways, click here.

We've run out of room to remind you of our spooktastic selection of Halloween images, or the fact that our collection of images for Black History Month continues to grow, but you can discover all this by searching our site at www.maryevans.com.

And if we can be of assistance, then drop us a line at pictures@maryevans.com or call 020 8318 0034.
