Details
Lieutenant-Commander A.C. Read, USN, who commanded the Curtiss NC-4 flying boat which accomplished the first aerial crossing of the Atlantic ocean (by stages via the Azores). Departing from Trepassy Bay, Newfoundland, on 16 May 1919, the flying boat arrived at Lisbon - via Ponta Delgada - on 27 May, and then made a symbolic flight to Plymouth from where the original Pilgrim Fathers departed for America in the ‘Mayflower’ on 6 September 1620.
