regular as the tides123456come taxis
their drivers call in a secret code
lives ferment12345up here
five hundred feet nearer to heaven
or hell1234567depending on your view
hawthorns bend inland
anxious12345they point the way back
and the wind offers briefings
to whoever will listen:
not the shrieking students123456hair
flapping in delight12345678a selfie stick
from the edge
as if one extra step123456would never
jigger the cliff1234567out of its slumber
its Mesozoic peace
maybe the silent ones:12345the woman
who melts to air when nobody’s
looking1234567the man
who hears freedom in the call of gulls
or a chaplain’s voice1234567steady
persisting
