Veteran
by Sally Festing

Few cars pass the blinkered cart-horse
1234munching from hessian
and the mouth-organ man sits
1234by the kiss-gate to the meadows –
Why can’t I give him more?
Why can’t he walk?
Doesn’t he have legs?
Where is the war?
How do people get their power?
Why does everyone kill everyone?
Though the mouth-organ man has gone,
the mutilation buried in his tune
1234revisits me. Lives on.

Sally Festing has been called ‘a feet off the ground writer … she confuses perspectives brilliantly and entertainingly’ (UA Fanthorpe). Journalism, radio plays, academic studies, Penguin biographies of Gertrude Jekyll, Barbara Hepworth and varied non-fiction books have fed into six books of poetry. Her poetry has won prizes and featured in 40 different magazines (in print or online). A sixth collection, The White Queen’s Last Stand (KFS, 2021), features the life and work of a French woman sculptor, Germaine Richier. An ekphrastic element has always been strong. http://sallyfesting.info/
