Schuthóg / White Horses
by Eithne Hand

In choppy seas and fading light, the radar shows a pulse.
We know they are close but can’t find them.

Air leaking from sponsons,
their crippled raft appears,
whooshing and spluttering.
We throw life jackets to
panicked voices shouting,
screaming if they fall in,
some children almost dancing.
Dozens scattered now between life rafts –
orange jackets on white horses.

Later, in darkness, prayers of thanks to
Allah! Mon Dieu! Jesu! From everywhere
a smell of fuel burned skin.

Four pregnant women and a week old baby.
His dad wants to name him Lifebuoy.
His mum does not.
