Mary Evans Picture Library launches Poems & Pictures Blog

The 21st anniversary of National Poetry Day takes place this year, on Thursday 8 October. This annual event is a celebration of poetry and poets, with events taking place all over the UK and special programmes on radio and television.

At Mary Evans Picture Library we're making our own contribution to this special day by launching a new addition to our website: our very own Poetry Blog to complement our existing WWI Blog. It contains poems specially written by contemporary poets who have been inspired by images from our collection, as well as other poems, both old and new, which we've matched up with selected images from our files.

Over the past few months we've been inviting poets to browse through the many images on our website and send us a poem (or two, or three) in response. We've been really thrilled and excited by the results, which so far include a bell-ringing suffragette, two 1960s dolly birds, a ghostly figure on a staircase, and a monkey dressed as a poet.

Starting with contributions from the Nevada Street Poets, a group local to Mary Evans, the idea was swiftly taken up by poets who heard about the project from further afield and we anticipate the blog and its contributors will grow quickly over the next few weeks and months.

We will continue adding to the blog, and increasing the number of poets involved, so do keep visiting, and if you are interested in contributing, please do get in touch.
