Collections Crossover: Happy Holidays |
Whether it's a fortnight in the Balearics or a weekend in Bognor, with schools about to break up for the summer, and many people preparing for the great getaway, we're all in a holiday frame of mind. The perfect time then, to share some of the excellent material we have on this subject. First of all a reminder of the Thomas Cook archive, a fabulous collection from the UK's oldest travel company with brochures and photographs documenting its 180 years of helping Brits get away from it all. We have hundreds of travel posters too, thanks to collections such as Onslows Auctioneers, Twentieth Century Posters, Retrograph, and Kiki Werth. By no means exhaustive, this colourful selection of graphic delights, reminds us of the seductive glamour of travel in the first half of the twentieth century. If a holiday packed with cultural highlights is more your bag, then Manuel Cohen's photographs act as a travel guide to the world's most dazzling sites, from French chateaux or Baroque ceilings, to Mayan ruins and the colourful cities of Rajasthan. And if you're staycationing (for clarity - that's staying at home but having some days out), then Historic England's collection of heritage sites around the UK might provide some inspiration. Postcards, naturally, are a fantastic source for holiday destinations. The John Hinde Postcard Collection, now fully located here at the library, brings us retrotastic reminders of quaint seaside holidays, rural tours of Ireland or the multi-coloured world of Butlin's camps. We're finding and scanning more postcards from the archive now that it's close to hand. Donald McGill's saucy postcards (not for those of a delicate disposition) are most closely associated with the seaside - don't forget we represent his work. And for a gentler view of the UK's most pleasant spots, a browse through the J.Salmon archive, with scenic views by artists such as Alfred Robert Quinton, is worth your time. Here are a few to whet your appetite. The periodicals collection here at the library is an unrivalled source for all aspects of travel and holidays. We have a run of The Traveller magazine ('For whom the world is a playground') a rare and short-lived magazine from the 1900s published by George Newnes, giving wise advice to intrepid travellers. The magazines in the Illustrated London News archive were keen to record the smartest resorts around Europe, give advice on what to wear, how to get there, who to hang out with and how to cultivate that all-important status symbol - the suntan. The French Riviera, Venice, Le Touquet, the health resorts of Germany, Biarritz and Alpine skiing destinations are all covered, with everything from outstanding cover art to luggage adverts all part of the historic holiday experience. This selection is great fun. Finally, a recent addition to the library has been this set of vintage photo wallets, a charming receptacle for those all-important holiday snaps. If you're off on your hols, have a fabulous time. But before you go, or when you're back, do let us help with any projects you might have.
