The collection on our site from postcard publisher, J. Salmon, has been boosted by the addition of over a thousand colour photos, scanned from original negatives from the 1950s, '60s and '70s and originally used for postcard reproductions. We've put together a select bunch of
around 300 images to showcase these terrific multi-coloured views of British villages, towns and cities from 60 years ago.
J Salmon Ltd., was founded in 1880 by Joseph Salmon, a London bookseller running a stationer's shop and general printing business in Sevenoaks, Kent. His son, also Joseph, took over the business and became interested in the potential of printing and publishing pictorial postcards, initially depicting local views.
Shots of seaside towns turn up time and again, not least because holidaymakers buy postcards there. It's noticeable how many follow the blueprint of Victorian town planning with their putting greens, ornamental gardens, promenades and Marine Parade street names, a familiarity that brings comfort and nostalgia. There are also scenes of London and other big cities, and modernist architecture in post-war new towns or bombed out cities such as Coventry.
