Happy Birthday Joseph Mallord William Turner, 250 years old today.

Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you can't have failed to notice that the art world has been marking this auspicious anniversary all year, with a series of events and exhibitions celebrating Turner's revolutionary brilliance.

It seems apt that one of the greatest of English painters was born on St. George's Day, in a house on Maiden Lane, Covent Garden belonging to his father, a barber and wigmaker. Showing a prodigious talent, Turner entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1789 aged just 14, and during his career marked himself out as an experimental maverick whose turbulent seascapes and shimmering views of England, Europe and beyond presaged the Impressionists.

We have an excellent selection of Turner images ranging from his 'greatest hits' oil paintings, to chalk sketches, mezzotints, watercolour still lives, and other works on paper, all representing an evolving artist with a huge range, and an insatiable appetite to keep creating.

Pulling together these images also gives us the opportunity to highlight the rich seam of fine art imagery we have available. Our Turner images come from a range of sources: Thaliastock, Pictures Now, Everett Collection, Interfoto, Iberfoto, World History Archive, and National Museums Northern Ireland, while the largest selection is via the Ashmolean Museum, which boasts a fine range of classic and lesser-known works. Our own collection offers several portraits of Turner through the years, from young Romantic artist of his youth to caricatures conveying the curmudgeonly (but still brilliant) eccentric he became.

If you're looking for fine art, then do give us a go. In addition to Turner, we've got Tintoretto, Tissot and Titian - as well as plenty of artists whose names begin with other letters of the alphabet too.

As always we're available to help with research, quotes and any other questions you may have about using our library. You can reach us on 020 8318 0034 or by emailing pictures@maryevans.com.
