Collection of the week: The John Hinde Archive

For those with long memories, this second outing for the John Hinde Archive in our regular Collection of the Week series might ring a bell. We started representing the copyright a few years ago, but just last week took receipt of the entire (very heavy!) collection of original postcards and photographs, now making themselves at home in our Blackheath building.

John Hinde was born in 1916, but his career as a photographer took off mid-century, when he founded his company, John Hinde Ltd., in Dublin in 1956, and began to publish postcards of Ireland, Britain and beyond. He pioneered a dazzling new style in colour photography, and the images, taken on large format cameras by Hinde and his roster of photographers, have a distinctively retro, colour-saturated look, providing us with a fascinating and nostalgic document of holiday habits and global destinations.

We're thrilled to have the collection so close at hand, and are looking forward to getting to grips with the thousands of wonderful images in the characterful filing cabinets. If you're looking for something particular, we can search and scan to order. Of those already available to view online, there are plenty of Irish scenes, plus postcards from Canada and Britain (including the magnificent Butlin's holiday camp photos), but we expect to add images from many more countries in the weeks to come.

In the meantime, take a look at this selection to whet your appetite, and if you'd like to know more about John Hinde or any aspect of the library, email us at pictures@maryevans.com or call 020 8318 0034.
