Five years ago, we devoted a Collection of the Week newsletter to the caricatures of John Ireland owned by The Lennard Publishing Collection. At the time, almost 350 brilliantly executed illustrations were made available of famous figures from the 1980s to the present day drawing from the worlds of rugby, cricket, golf, racing, sports commentary, television, music, and politics, with some superb royal portraits, and themed groups such as celebrity gardeners, favourite comedians and well-known TV detectives.
We're delighted to let you know that we've now added another tranche of caricatures by John, as well as Richard Willson, John Thirsk, Kevin Hudson, Polly Raynes, Mike White and Gary Caldwell. These were all originally commissioned for various books on sport and entertainment published by Lennard during the 1980s and are consequently an amusing snapshot of celebrities of that time, From John Gielgud to Kenny Everett, Cilla Black to Michael Parkinson, Jimmy Tarbuck, Bruce Forsyth, David Coleman, 'Our 'Enry' Cooper, and maverick show jumper Harvey Smith, it's a roll call of well-loved faces.
There are a few anomalies to this including a rather nice series of watercolours on Glyndebourne Festival and illustrations of footballing hero, Roy of the Rovers, but worth including we thought. All in all, a cheering selection and one guaranteed to stir your nostalgic soul.
