Collection of the week: Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum, London, is one of the biggest and oldest institutions of its kind in the world, having begun life in 1753. It continues to be one of the most visited museums in Europe. The museum's collection contains over 80 million items and Mary Evans Picture Library is pleased to represent over 15,000 of its pictures.

The collection charts more than 300 years of exploration and research in natural history. The images available through us include beautiful and rare colour book plates from botanical and zoological journals published during the 17th to 20th centuries, photographs of early expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic and also images of Natural History Museum exhibitions and the fine motifs and surface designs of the stunning Cromwell Road building. The images give a fine representation of the Natural History Museum's five main collection areas; botany, entomology, mineralogy, zoology and palaeontology.
