Collection of the week: The Ros Fraser Collection

Among the collections we represent here at the library are a number of family archives comprised of personal photographs. The Ros Fraser Collection is one such collection, and although it is small at just over 100 pictures, it is nevertheless a delightful evocation of time and place, in this case, the 1930s.

Most photographs are by Ros's father, and feature her mother Rene, at a time the couple were living on a boat. Many of the black & white photographs build up an idyllic portrait of a life lived on board, and most were taken while the boat was moored in the Norfolk Broads in East Anglia. The images are a cut above the amateur snapshot, and feature Rene looking stylish and chic whether she's fishing, varnishing wood, rowing or sailing. She's also pictured riding a rather splendid Sunbeam motorcycle. Although the photographs are a record of just one family, and in fact, mostly just one person, they bring together the interests, fashions and pastimes of that era into sharp focus - motorbikes & cars, boats, fitness, the great outdoors - and dogs.
