Picture No 10513075 Date 21 October 1966 Description The Aberfan disaster Details Local people, including miners from nearby collieries, lead the effort to clear the debris following the landslide which saw a huge mass of excavated mining debris smash into the Welsh village of Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. A farm, terraced houses and a school (Pantglas Junior School) were hit, and the tragedy cost the lives of 116 children and 28 adults.
