Local people, including miners from nearby collieries, lead the effort to clear the debris following the landslide which saw a huge mass of excavated mining debris smash into the Welsh village of Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. A farm, terraced houses and a school (Pantglas Junior School) were hit, and the tragedy cost the lives of 116 children and 28 adults.
