Sarcophagus, ciborium, Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe

Marble sarcophagus with 3 crosses and Latin inscription stating that the tomb preserves the body of archbishop John V of Ravenna, 8th century, in the side aisle of the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, a Byzantine church consecrated 549 AD by bishop Maximian, dedicated to St Apollinaris, in Classe, Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Above is a marble plaque, c. 730-740 AD, a deed of donation to John V and the monastery of Classe, of the Camillaria agricultural estate. On the right is a ciborium or altar canopy, with 4 twisted columns, acanthus leaf capitals and interlaced bas-relief carving, and altar with bust of St Apollinaris giving blessing above frieze of Christ and apostles, marble, in Carolingian or pre-Romanesque style, 9th century. The architrave inscription by Petrus cites a dedication under archbishop Valerius c. 810-820 to Christ and St Eleuchadius. A confession or crypt behind metal grille secures relics below.
