Annexation of the Gilbert Islands, situated in the West Pacific Ocean: HMS Royalist commanded by Captain Davis, hoisted the British flag on Apamana Island on 27th May [1892] proclaiming the whole group [of islands] under British protection, and afterwars visited the other islands, hoisting flags on them also
