Bata headquarters

Gottwaldov, 1949. Presidential portrait of Klement Gottwlad on face of a former Bata headquarters building, second tallest in Europe. Bata factories together with other light and heavy industry, Jewish property, castles and chateaus, millions of acres of farmland were confiscated after WWII by the Czechoslovak government under so called Benes Decrees. Jan Antonin Bata who helped hundreds of Czechoslovaks including Jews from being transported to labor camps or death camps was tried for treason. He emigrated to Canada where he continued a successful shoe business. CTK Vintage Photo
