Jan Palach - coffin - funeral - last respects
Czech university student Jan Palach set himself on fire in Wenceslas Square in Prague on January 16, 1969, as a political protest against the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia. His funeral turned into a major mass protest against the occupation. Another student Jan Zajic burned himself to death in the same place on February 25, 1969, followed by Evzen Plocek in April 1969 in Jihlava. People file past the coffin to pay their last respects to Jan Palach during a funeral ceremony at the courtyard of Karolinum in Prague, January 24, 1969. CTK Photo/Jiri Finda
