The Berlin Wall is built - 1961
A GDR policeman ('Volkspolizist') stands in front of anxious East Berlin citizens with his raised gun on Swinemuender Street in Berlin's borough Wedding, Berlin, August 1961. Under the protection of GDR armed forces construction teams began to errect road blocks made of barbed wire in order to barr off the eastern part of the city from the western in the early morning hours of August 13th 1961. The wall was meant to stop the steadily growing number of East Berliners fleeing to West Berlin
