The Berlin Wall is built - 1961
Two GDR policemen ('Volkspolizisten') stand in front of anxious East Berlin citizens on Bernauer Street in Berlin, August 1961. Under the protection of GDR armed forces, construction teams began to errect road blocks made of barbed wire in order to barr off the eastern part of the city from the western in the early morning hours of August 13th 1961. The wall was meant to stop the steadily growing number of Germans fleeing from the east to the west
