Franz von Papen

The former Reich Chancellor (1932) Franz von Papen (right) at the beginning of the hearing of an appeal in the Berufungskammer (translated as chamber of appeal') of Nuremberg on 18 January 1949. On 26 January 1949, the final - reduced - sentence was announced. After a military career, von Papen made a political career as a member of the Zentrumspartei (translated as German Centre Party'). Although he often represented the opposite point of view, he represented the party in the Prussian federal state parliament from 1920-1928 and 1930-1932. From May (leaving the party) until November 1932, von Papen was Reich Chancellor, from 1933 until 1934 he was Hitler's vice-chancellor. As envoy in Vienna he prepared the annexation of Austria. In 1939, he went to Turkey as ambassador. After World War Two, von Papen was acquitted by the International Court in Nuremberg, but was put in the group of the incriminated and sentenced to eight years of labour camp (served through imprisonment) and 30 000 Mark collection from his property. Franz von Papen was born in Werl on 29 October 1879 and died in Obersasbach on 02 May 1969
