GDR - Demonstration on 04 November 1989
About 500, 000 people gather peacefully during what is the GDR's largest protest demonstration in East Berlin on 04 November 1989. Here photographer Horst Strum is pictured outside the Palace of the Republic with posters and banners that call for solutions or cite bold slogans (here an allusion to the new chairman of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany SED, Egon Krenz). With slogans and demands of various groups and people a new stage of the turnaround ('Die Wende') was initiated - five days later boarders were opened to the West. Photo: Michael Richter
